There are not many trees that could surpass the ash in cultural importance. Norse mythology refers to ash as the Yggdrasil, the very tree upon which the Earth itself was balanced. At the trees roots lived the Three Norns, beings that controlled the fates of all life in the branches above.

In many cultures worldwide ash is believed to possess healing qualities including tonics, stimulants and cures.
